What is in a name?

“What is in the name, a rose smells as sweet by any other name” said the most famous bard Shakespeare. In Bollywood, if a movie becomes hit then the character name of the star is repeated in many of his upcoming films because it is thought to be lucky. Thus superstar Amitabh’s character has been called “Vijay” in as many as 19 movies. We had a boy who was attendant in our office whose real name was also “Vijay”. I asked him his name and when he told “Vijay”, I jokingly said that this is the name Amitabh has in… Read More »What is in a name?

Boats: the metaphor of life

Boats evoke mysterious feelings in most of us. The scene of a far off  boat on the river water looking like a speck is etched permanently in the memory of those who had seen this. It is the feeling of departure of some one close to us who is going away. When the fishermen leave for high seas for their occupation of  catch, their families wait anxiously with baited breaths for their safe return. Sea is full of hopes, despair and surprises. Same is the story of life which wobbles on the surface of  sea of life. Many a times… Read More »Boats: the metaphor of life

One day in the life of…..

My interaction with people is very limited. More or less, I spend my days aimlessly when I am not in office. I generally rise up early in the morning. In fact I have at least 4 hours at my disposal before going to the office. I go out and walk for about 5 kilometers. Sometimes, I run short distances and do some exercises. Then after taking bath and breakfast, sit down watch some television and proceed to office. Similarly, in the evening, I return home from office between six and seven. After coming back I take tea and then recline… Read More »One day in the life of…..

Milking the Great

In India, there are always plenty of people with vested interests. They hijack the name of some great man and exploit it for religious, political and other interest by creating the frenzy among the gullible people. But ultimate aim is to create a life of riches and comfort for themselves and their coming generations. For this they even don’t spare their own innocent people. Take for example, Mahatma Gandhi. He tried his best to become apolitical and urged to disband the congress on the logic that its role is over once the country became independent. No one bothered to listen… Read More »Milking the Great

What is Peace?

It has been days I have felt peace and tranquility of mind. In fact it seems that I am living in a state oblivious of my state of mind. Neither do I ever feel that I am calm, neither do I feel very much excited. What is peace after all? Some say it is the state of mind when your body is in agreement with mind. There is no struggle between two. They seem to merge into one another. In the turbulent state of mind, mind it seems is detached from the body and hovers outside. Body and mind are… Read More »What is Peace?

Time

There is a time which was made by the God. There are even arguments that it existed even before God. This eternal time is like a river which always flow with same constancy. And which never dries up, in which there are no ripples, no high or low tides. There does not exist any moon which can cause it to have tides. In fact nothing can change its tranquility. It flows unmindful. It never ceases to flow. There is never ever any change in its flow. So this is the time of the God. This is the basic time. If… Read More »Time

Nothing is Permanent

All days are not same. All people are not same. The seasons continue to change. They do not remain the same. Nights and days do not remain the same. Days give way to nights and nights to days. Husbandman sows different seeds in different seasons. Nothing is eternal, permanence does not exist. If there is unhappiness today, tomorrow will be happiness. Always changes are taking place, some of them periodically. The attachment to a person also fades when the person is away as it is said truly “out of sight, out of mind”. After all, of what use is the… Read More »Nothing is Permanent

New Leaves are Sprouting

After the winter comes the spring and sleeping nature wakes up and comes to life. As the poet, Shelley said in his ode to the West wind, had said it so truthfully “When the winter comes, can the spring be too far”. He must be an optimist and means to reassure his pensive reader saying that the moments of ups and downs are transitory. Thus the interminable cycle of seasons goes on. In India, one can experience varied climates and seasons. Summers to harsh and unbearable, winter too cold in many parts of our country. Even the advent of a… Read More »New Leaves are Sprouting
