B Merwan and Co: Closure of an legendary Cafe

The iconic Irani Cafe is going to shut its shutters after treating the customers to Brun Maska, Mawa Cake, Custard and Omelettes for a century. It is one of famous Irani bakeries which were popular in Mumbai.
The cafe is situated in Grant Road and is popularly known as Merwan. It was set up in March 1914 by Boman Merwan Nasra. It is the third generation of Iranis now in running. Cousins Sarosh and Bomi were running it. They have said quits.
And unlike in the case of other old-time city restaurants that shut due to dwindling business, drawing customers has never been a problem for Merwan. Located right outside the eastern side of the railway station, the café still has long-time customers ambling in for their daily fix of mawa cakes and brun pao, from as early as 5.30am. It also operates a provision store on the premises.
The hectic schedule and the stress of running the place, coupled with the fact that the next generation cannot take over the business, though, has made the Irani family decide to shut shop. Fourth generation are all daughters content with their families. They are not even living in India.
The cafe is so famous that there is rush even at 5.30 in the morning. The owners are in the cafe at 3.0 am in the morning. Regular customers which included taxi drivers, students and office goers are dismayed at the closure.
The cafe is so popular that even today, whenever anyone is in the (Grant Road) area, or visiting Mumbai, people tell him ‘Merwan se cake leke aao’,” says city historian Deepak Rao. “It is an iconic place.”
The cafe has chairs made of Czechoslovakian wood, marble topped tables and signboard with the familiar lettering that are as old as the café.

The homegrown website has a very beautiful entry on this cafe with photographs in the closing off days.

Marriage, Love and Dhokha

She is now 44 years old, past her prime by any standards. Born into a middle class family in the rural area adjoining the mega city, she also was attracted to the city like a magnet. And why not? When thousands gravitate towards the city which has the power to transform a person and catapult the destiny.
But everyone is not lucky and not able to withstand the cut throat competition. Many a times you must have heard the stories of casting couch. It is especially more difficult for girls.
She also was like that and ended up by getting a few insignificant roles in two three movies. Basically she became an stage show performer.
She had her first marriage when she was about 17 years of age. Through this love marriage she gave birth to a son who is now about 27 years old. The marriage did not last as she began seeing another man and after divorce married to the second man. From this union she gave bith to twins who are now about 16 years old.
But her mind was not in her control. It was like an untamed horse. It continuously wandered. So she began another affair, this time to a man who is almost half her age. They hatched a plan to waylay her husband.
One evening, she left her home in the car on the pretext of performing at a small village nearby. Her husband wanted to drove her there but she insisted on going alone as it was not far.
She met her lover and his friend at a flat. They enjoyed there and after that woman alone left the city in the bus to a predestined city very far away.
After this, her lover and his accomplice drove the car through hills and reached a location which was overlooking a gorge and both pushed the car into the gorge 900 feet below along with the mobile phone of woman. They then pretended having seen the car falling down and telling the story to the drivers of vehicles passing by. Police came to know this and found the car completly mangled. This was done to make her husband beleive that she had died.
Police began going through calls and zeroed in on the numbers of her lover and accomplish. Accomplish has return back from the place of accident and lover has travelled on and united with the woman. The accomplish cracked on interrogation and everything fell to place. Both the woman and lover came back to city. The husband who was worried at the absence of her and wad looking for her is broke and shattered.
What is to be concluded from this? The ways of the heart are strange. It does not care for any moral or other societical mores Continue reading

Dhak Dhak Song

Ever since Madhuri Dixit returned to India she is trying very hard to enter the Indian film industry. She is sitting as one of the judges in the dance show on television channels where her songs are extolled by the dancers. Also doing a couple of advertisement endorsing the toothpaste that remove all the tooth troubles and shines our teeth. She has appeared in item songs against Ranbir Kapoor and worked in the Dedh Isquiya against Naseerudin Shah. But she is still to hit the limelight. One of the negative factors is her advancing age and availability of fresh faces in plenty. She seems to be desperate.

In her hey days, she really set the screen ablaze with her sensuous dances. One of these was from the movie Beta and it was titled “Dhak Dhak”. It was so provocative that she earned the eponym of being the “Dhak Dhak” girl. The song was not original as is the case with many songs which have been lifted from South Indian movies and foreign movies. It has been happening since old days. The only difference is that in those days due to the lack of so many sources of information nobody could suspect the copy. But today with the explosion of information available through internet nothing remains hidden long and soon becomes exposed.

So this song was adapted from an Illayaraja composition called “Abba nee teeyani debba” from the Telugu movie Jagadeka Veerudu Atikola Sundari featuring superstar Chiranjeevi and Sridevi. Sridevi looks much graceful and devoid of any sensuousness.
